Responsible to:              Service Manager Open


Responsible for: The operational requirements of the kitchen at Open Access Service, Riverbank to include all food preparation and supervision of volunteers, catering assistants and clients.


Reports to: Service Manager and Current Catering Chef


Objective:To effectively, efficiently, economically and hygienically deliver care hospitality and catering services for our clients and in doing so, to uphold the philosophy and working ethos of Merchants Quay Ireland.


Key Responsibilities:

  • To plan, organise and control all food services;

  • Cook appropriate nutritious food for clients of the service;

  • To liaise with management to ensure all client needs and requirements are met;

  • Monitor the quality of the food and service provided;

  • To ensure that the needs of our clients are attended to with sensitivity and efficiency;

  • Organising, leading and motivating catering assistants

  • Experience of dealing with incidents and emergencies as they occur and bring them to satisfactory conclusions within the framework of MQI policies and to record details of such incidents as appropriate;

  • To be up-to-date and responsible for ensuring that we are HACCP compliant and for ensuring that we are compliant with regard to other relevant procedures in the delivery of meals services to our clients;

  • Ensuring that all Health & Safety regulations are strictly observed including keeping appropriate records e.g. food temperatures etc;

  • Ensure that appropriate Hygiene standards are maintained in the service and staff adhere to all the Health and Safety regulations;

  • Handle client complaints;

  • To maintain accurate administrative and IT records as required;

  • To attend all training sessions, workshops and courses as advised;

  • To engage in regular communication and feedback with catering cook

  • To work as part of a team and actively encourage this ethos among the workers;

  • To assist with any other duties which management might reasonably request;

Person Specification

The ideal candidate for this post will have:

  • A relevant qualification in the area of Catering;

  • Ideally a minimum of three years’ experience of working in a similar post;

  • A detailed knowledge of HACCP and applying same in a catering environment;

  • Have had experience in supervising catering assistants, volunteers and clients while in the kitchen environment;

  • Demonstrate the ability to lead, communicate and facilitate;

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • A working knowledge of health and safety and its application in a Kitchen environment;

  • Ability to demonstrate skills in the organization of own work and that of others;

  • A proven commitment to treating people with dignity and respect;

  • Excellent customer service skills;

  • An understanding of the principles of teamwork and the ability to work on your own initiative as well as part of a team;

  • Be adaptive to change for the long term future of MQI;

  • Demonstrate a commitment to the needs of our client group;
